The Machine Remembers You is a real-time interactive video installation that transforms participants into living portraits displaced across time. Using a live camera feed, the work composites visitors' current image with ghostly echoes of their movements from moments before.
As you approach the installation, you encounter yourself - but not quite in the present. Your past self still moves through the space your body has already left. Pause, gesture, or play, and the effects respond to your choreography: bodies stretch, smear, and dissolve into abstract temporal forms before reconstituting. The experience requires no instruction; you simply arrive, move, and discover.
Conceptually, the work inhabits the tension between surveillance anxiety and voluntary self-exposure - the simultaneous fear of being watched and the compulsion to be seen. The machine processes you without understanding you. Your image is stored, looped, and returned transformed. In a world that watches and remembers everything, what do you choose to show?
About the Artist
Andrew O'Connor is a Hamilton-based New Media artist whose practice spans interactive installation, real-time audiovisual performance, and immersive media environments. Working at the intersection of digital technology and human experience, their work uses custom-coded software, live video processing, and generative systems to create spaces where audiences participate rather than simply observe. Co-founder of both Hamilton Audio Visual Node (HAVN) and OPTICKS (an experimental light and projection art collective), Andrew has spent over a decade building Hamilton's interdisciplinary arts community through exhibitions, performances, and public programming. Their work explores the cultural anxieties surrounding surveillance and self-exposure in the digital age.
