Terra Precarium is a series of hand-cut steel sculptures inspired by lichen, fungi, and slime mould. Salvaged industrial steel is carved into branching forms that blur the boundaries between biological growth and industrial material. The work explores the unstable distinction between life and nonlife. Corrosion, oxidation, and weathering become part of the sculptures, allowing the material to continue changing after fabrication. Some works incorporate modified sensing instruments, including a theremin and metal detector, translating proximity and the physical properties of the steel into sound. The sculptures can function as a static installation or be activated through live performance.
